Supporting Teens’ Mental Health and Recovery Over the Summer Break

For teens in recovery — or those struggling quietly with their mental health — summer can be a vulnerable time. Without the built-in structure of school, many adolescents find themselves feeling unmoored. Days can blur together. Peer support drops off. Isolation creeps in. For families already navigating mental health or substance use challenges, this can increase the risk of emotional instability or relapse.

At Oakvine Recovery Center, we see this every year — and we prepare for it. Because when teens lose structure, they don’t just need supervision. They need purpose, connection, and support that’s both affirming and growth-oriented.

Our adolescent outpatient program is designed to meet this need. Whether your teen is already in treatment or just starting to show signs of stress, anxiety, depression, or substance use, summer can be a powerful window for healing. It’s a time when they’re not juggling school pressures — and with the right support in place, they can actually deepen the skills that will carry them forward once school resumes.

We use evidence-based methods like DBT, expressive therapies, and mindfulness-based interventions to help teens regulate emotions, build confidence, and re-engage with life. Sessions are offered during the day or after school hours, with flexible scheduling to accommodate family needs. And while we always take a trauma-informed approach, we also make room for joy — group activities, laughter, and connection are a vital part of the process.

If your teen is struggling with anxiety, mood swings, social withdrawal, or substance use, don’t wait for things to “settle.” Use this summer to intervene in a way that builds resilience, not just routine.

We’re here to help your family thrive — all summer long.
